I love music! These days I'm a more confident programmer than I am musician, but I do really enjoy songwriting and composing.

Album-on-a-phone

Not many of my songs have ever made it to the recording stage. In 2019, I had the notion to record an album of songs straight into my phone, using only GarageBand.

I love those kind of creative constraints, and it also helped me break away from perfectionism. Because these songs sure aren't perfect! But they are from the heart.

The Mighty

This was the first full song I ever attempted to record and produce entirely on my phone. Quite the learning opportunity!

I composed this in 2013, and it’s a song that’s always felt special to me. Sometimes that can actually make it harder to put it out into the world, but I’m glad I did.

Golden Heart

Composed in 2016, for the 30th birthday of my sister-in-law and good friend, Annie. Harmonies by my lovely wife Sharon.

I used to write birthday songs for people all the time! This is the last of those (so far), but it’s a good one. It’s probably my favourite of these three songs.

Some of my vocals here were recorded while I had a baby asleep on my back! That’s a happy, nostalgic memory now. Aw, bless.

Black and Blue

Over time my songwriting has generally become simpler, but on the other hand, I’ve been learning to write more from the heart.

This one, originally composed in 2017, felt important to get recorded.

I never did complete a full album's worth of songs. 2020 happened, which is probably all the explanation you need! But three is almost enough for a short EP! And who knows, maybe there will be more to come.

Other music

I've composed plenty of other pieces of music, particularly soundtracks for various indie games I've been involved with! So as with other pages here, I intend to flesh this out over time.
